I’m thrilled to share something that’s very important to me. I’ll be presenting at an upcoming summit on “Awakening Your True Desire Through Vagus Nerve Regulation.”
This presentation combines two powerful streams of work. It integrates the ancient wisdom of meditation and mindfulness. It also includes cutting-edge neuroscience. This explores how our nervous system influences what we perceive as our desires. It contrasts this with what we truly desire.
The Problem We Don’t Talk About
How many times have you achieved something you thought you wanted, only to feel… empty? Or found yourself constantly chasing goals that feel heavy and pressured, driven by “shoulds” rather than genuine excitement?
This disconnect isn’t a character flaw – it’s often a nervous system issue.
When we operate from survival states, we experience the anxiety of the fight-or-flight response. Alternatively, we might feel the numbness of shutdown. In these states, we literally cannot access our authentic desires. Instead, we chase what we think will make us safe, acceptable, or worthy.
My Own Journey from Survival to Soul
A few years ago, after experiencing multiple life-changing events in rapid succession, my nervous system went into complete survival mode. Panic attacks, burnout, running on empty but unable to stop – I was living in a constant state of hypervigilance.
In that state, every decision I made was driven by fear. I stayed in my corporate career because it was the “practical” and “safe” thing to do. However, something inside me felt increasingly disconnected. I also felt drained.
Everything changed when I discovered meditation and began studying with my teacher, davidji. As I learned about the nervous system and began practices that actually regulated my vagus nerve, something profound shifted.
From this calmer, more regulated state, I began to hear different whispers. Not the frantic “you should do this” voices, but a quieter knowing that asked: “What if you taught meditation? What if you wrote about healing? What if you helped others find their way back to themselves?”
The transition from corporate work to teaching was a significant one. Writing my book, “Holistic Vagus Nerve Reset,” and coaching were also substantial endeavors. It wasn’t just a career change. It was the difference between living from survival versus living from the soul.
The Science Behind the Shift
What I discovered through both personal experience and research is that the vagus nerve is your body’s longest cranial nerve. It acts as a bridge between your mind and body. It also serves as a link between stress and calm. Additionally, it connects conditioned goals and authentic desires.
When your vagus nerve is well-regulated:
- Your nervous system feels safe enough to want beyond survival
- You can distinguish between fear-driven “shoulds” and soul-centered longings
- You make decisions from clarity rather than reactivity
- You access creativity, curiosity, and connection
This isn’t just a feel-good theory. It’s supported by Polyvagal Theory. It can be measured through heart rate variability and other biomarkers.
